  • Transport: the city centre becomes very crowded, so metro services and ride-hailing apps are recommended to avoid traffic and parking difficulties
  • Clothing and comfort: December in Porto is often cold and humid, so layered clothing and comfortable footwear are essential, especially for those spending long periods outdoors
  • Traditions: It is customary to eat 12 raisins at midnight, one for each month of the year, as a way to attract good luck.
  • Where to eat: Many restaurants offer special menus on New Year’s Eve and on January 1st (advance reservations are recommended).

Conclusion

Celebrating New Year’s Eve in Porto in 2025/2026 offers experiences for every taste. The party at Avenida dos Aliados captures the collective and free-spirited nature of the night. Christmas Markets in northern Portugal

If you’re spending the season in Porto and feel like exploring beyond the city, Northern Portugal offers some of the most charming Christmas markets in the country. As the cold settles in and the festive lights take over the streets, nearby towns transform into true Christmas postcards. From Braga to Guimarães, and even Águeda’s vibrant displays, each destination has its own festive spirit, perfect for a winter day trip.

Whether you’re chasing traditional crafts, warming up with regional treats, or simply soaking in the magic of the season, these Northern Christmas markets are well worth the visit.

Braga é Natal

Braga is known for its strong religious traditions, and that spirituality also shapes how it celebrates Christmas. The “Braga é Natal” initiative extends across the city, with the main Christmas Market set up on Avenida Central. From November 29 to December 24, dozens of stalls offer handcrafted products, regional sweets, and handmade decorations in an atmosphere that blends tradition and modernity.

The city shines with thousands of lights and features one of the tallest Christmas trees in Portugal, becoming a popular meeting point for families and visitors. Alongside the market, there’s an ice rink, carousels, and a traditional nativity scene, creating an enchanting atmosphere for both children and adults.

Braga also places a strong focus on sustainability:

many of the materials used in decorations are recycled, and several activities have a charitable dimension, reinforcing the community spirit that defines the city.

Guimarães, Cidade Natal

In Guimarães, Christmas is celebrated with a unique blend of history and magic. The birthplace of Portugal transforms its UNESCO World Heritage historic center into a fairytale setting. The Christmas Market is set up on Alameda de São Dâmaso, where small wooden huts display products from local artisans, from textiles and ceramics to regional delicacies.

From late November, “Guimarães, Cidade Natal” also brings a wide cultural program: street performances, choir concerts, theater, and creative workshops. One of its main attractions is the open-air ice rink, which delights children and offers a stunning view of the illuminated old town.

For photography lovers, the setting is irresistible, every corner invites another snapshot. With its towers and squares beautifully decorated, Guimarães proves that Christmas can be celebrated with both elegance and authenticity.

Águeda: The City of Colorful Umbrellas and Christmas Magic

In recent years, Águeda has gained international fame for its streets covered with colorful umbrellas. An idea that extends beautifully into the Christmas season. During Águeda é Natal,” which runs from mid-November to early January, the city becomes one of the most magical holiday destinations in Portugal.

The Christmas Market is only one of the many attractions. The streets are illuminated with artistic installations and giant light sculptures, including the famous Santa Claus over 20 meters tall, one of the largest in the world. There are also light and sound shows, parades, concerts, and a tourist train that runs through the festively decorated center.

With more than 1.6 million visitors per edition, Águeda proves that it’s possible to combine tradition, art, and innovation in a celebration that delights both children and adults. The economic and tourism impact is remarkable, but the true charm lies in the city’s creative and community-driven spirit that fills the streets with color and joy.

Afternoon: Bookshops, Gardens, and Local Art

Your next stop is the famous Livraria Lello, considered one of the most beautiful bookstores in the world. With its neo-Gothic façade, intricate wooden staircase, and stained-glass ceiling, it’s a must-see, but do book tickets in advance to avoid long queues.

Afterwards, take a break in the Jardim da Cordoaria, a peaceful garden dotted with sculptures and centenary trees. From there, wander through the streets of Cedofeita and Rua Miguel Bombarda, where independent boutiques and art galleries give a contemporary flair to the city. It’s the perfect contrast to Porto’s historic core, showing the city’s creative side.

Evening: Sunset with a View

As the day winds down, head to a viewpoint. Two favorites are the Miradouro da Vitória, overlooking the river and the cathedral, and the Miradouro das Virtudes, popular with locals who gather there for sunset.

The first unit of the Porto brand Hotels Seven O Five will promote an artistic corridor for exhibitions with the aim of promoting local culture. October 18, 2024. One month after its inauguration, 705 Porto Prime Home, the first unit of the Hotels Seven O Five brand, will promote an exhibition area with 14 spaces to exhibit different visual arts.

The unit, located in Faria Guimarães, has a connecting space between the lobby and the garden, designed especially for the exhibition of artistic works. Starting today, October 18, this art corridor will showcase works by local talent.

The first artist to exhibit will be Luís Ferraz, an independent photographer born in Póvoa de Varzim. With a vast portfolio that covers photography in gastronomy, portraits, lifestyle, architecture, design and travel, Luís Ferraz has collaborated with several magazines and newspapers in Portugal and abroad. He lived in Germany for a year, where he published a series of books for the publisher Frechverlag and produced the images for the band’s debut album, Aged Mother.

Currently in Portugal, in addition to the editorial component, she has worked with commercial photography for several national and international projects.

Luís Ferraz’s photographic exhibition at 705 Porto Prime Home will have hospitality and gastronomy as its theme, with photographs that portray the faces behind these industries. The author will be present in the space, to present the works, on October 31, between 16:00 and 18:00.

“Art and culture are a central part of the DNA of our cities and the attractiveness of the destination Portugal owes a lot to them.

The hotel industry can and should be a cultural ambassador, as it is in a privileged position to connect with people who come to know our country. From day one, we defined that Hotels Seven O Five’s mission would be to provide our guests with a genuine connection with the local culture, allowing them to experience the city and not just stay in it.

This space is a contribution of our brand to value local art, providing our guests with an experience of cultural value and, at the same time, providing artists with a platform on which they can exhibit their work”, says Teresa Martins, General Manager of Hotels Seven O Five.

“We invite all the people of Porto and those who are visiting the city to come and see 705 Porto Prime Home and this space, as well as the work of Luís Ferraz”, adds Teresa Martins.

Unit 705 Porto Prime Home has 41 service apartments with three different typologies (studios, T1 and T2), combining the convenience and privacy of a tourist apartment with a personalized and always available service, with a 24-hour reception, concierge service, gym, podcast room and breakfast delivered directly to the apartments. The unit also has a garden with multifunctional areas, including a coworking space, lounge and a bar with a terrace, in an area of more than 300 m².

Also noteworthy is the bar with signature cocktails and light menu, both linked to the culture of matcha green tea, in line with the tribute that the brand makes, in its name and visual identity, to the opening of the first hotel in the world, the Japanese Nishiyama Onsen Keiunkan, in the year 705.

Personalization, authenticity, and sustainability in the heart of Porto

An approach built on personalized guest experiences, innovation, authenticity, and sustainability: this is the vision of Seven O Five, a new hospitality brand launched in 2024 in the Invicta city to offer visitors premium accommodation in Porto, complemented by personalized services and experiences connected to local culture.

A new entry into Porto’s hospitality market

The year 705 marks the inauguration of the world’s first hotel, the Japanese Nishiyama Onsen Keiunkan. This historic legacy is a testament to hospitality as a deeply human value.

Seven O Five embraces this historical reference to bridge the past and the present, keeping alive the traditional spirit of welcoming and caring for visitors, while embedding it in a narrative defined by an urban lifestyle, local culture, and a people-centered approach.

Its premium positioning, between upscale and midscale, results in accommodations that combine the quality and comfort of facilities and services with convenience and accessibility. Seven O Five caters to a segment of travellers who value attention to detail and personalized experiences, exceeding midscale standards without reaching upscale pricing.

A growing tourism market

The appeal of Porto and the North region has created fertile ground for new hospitality projects.

In a highly competitive context, Seven O Five emerges to stand out for its quality, accessibility, immersive spaces, and guest-centered approach.

“The appeal of Porto and the North region has created fertile ground for the development of new hospitality projects. But in such a competitive landscape, clients value unique proposals. A705 was born as a project designed to stand out within Porto’s hospitality offer: whether through the quality, accessibility, and atmosphere of our spaces, or through service personalization and a client-focused approach.” — Teresa Martins, General Manager

In addition, according to the National Statistics Institute, in 2023 the North region registered more than 8 million overnight stays (27% above 2019), with over 6.5 million international guests arriving through Francisco Sá Carneiro Airport.

Seven O Five’s expansion plans

In 2024, the brand opened two hotel units in prime areas of Porto.
By 2026, four more units are expected to open in Porto and Vila Nova de Gaia, diversifying the portfolio and reaching 400 available beds.

Seven O Five is led by professionals with extensive experience in international chains and large corporate groups. This team drives the brand’s expansion in a globally recognized destination, as evidenced by the World Travel Awards.
